Good Practice: Workplace Health Promotion
Workplace Health Promotion (WHP) is the combined efforts of employers, workers, and society to improve the health and well-being of people at work. This can be achieved through a combination of:
- Improving work organisation and the working environment
- Promoting active participation in the process of WHP
- Encouraging personal development
Health promotion at work benefits not only workers, but also the employer, with potential reductions in sickness-related costs and improved productivity. This also creates a societal benefit.
Effective WHP occurs when:
- Action is taken based on an analysis of the health requirements and needs of an enterprise
- All stakeholders in an enterprise are involved
- WHP actions seek to improve the quality of working life and conditions as well as focusing on the behaviour of the individual worker
- Workplace health actions are integrated into management practices and the daily routine of an enterprise.
